A Good ‘Barleycorn Pattern’ Bone Chess Set, circa 1850
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with wheat-husk decoration and reeded ball finials, queens with wheat-husk decoration and a gadrooned ball finial, bishops with split mitres, knights as carved horses’ heads, rooks as solid circular turrets with flags, pawns with ball finials, all the chessmen raised on reeded circular bases, in an oak box with a hinged lid, the interior lined with green baize.
