An English Bone "Barleycorn Pattern" Chess Set, 19th Century
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with foliate decoration and urn finials, queens with reeded ball finials, bishops with open mitres, knights as horse’s heads, rooks as reeded turrets with flags, pawns with ball finials, in a wooden box with a sliding lid marked CHESS
King: 13.6cm high
Pawn: 4.6cm high
Box: 8.4cm wide, 3.6cm wide, 7.9cm high

Condition
Generally ‘Very Good’. All flags intact. Some minor hairline cracks and minor surface scuffs and dents. Box dates from the 1930s.

Nice example of the classic English ‘Barleycorn’ pattern, popular in the 19th centry. Especially nice larger size with the King coming in at just over 13cm. The box dates from the 1930s.
